The Free Tool For Helping Relieve Stress: An Introduction to Grounding
Introduction
There are many ways people choose to relieve stress. Some people choose the conventional route and other people choose an alternative route. Some cost a lot of money and other ways cost very little. However, there is one particular way that is free and very accessible to everyone needing help in this area, and that is a term called Grounding, or Earthing.
The only thing you need, is to be open to the concept of energetically connecting to our planet Earth, intention, and a willingness to make this a consistent daily practice.
Reconnecting To The Earth
While there have been certain cultures and people that have kept a better connection to the Earth than others, for about a millennia there has been an energetic disconnect between Human Beings and the Earth that has made regaining our sense of personal stability and health challenging.
We get very distracted with all the situations that are intertwined within our lives that we sometimes forget we are walking on, standing on and lying on the very ground and bearer of life that gives us the energy needed to support our healing.
This bearer of life that is our Earth freely gives us a cleansing, healing stream of energy into our bodies that cannot be physically seen but can be accessed by having the awareness of it and enacting the intention of connecting to it. So, therefore with what tends to be a very distracted life of our physical situations, we don’t know about it, don’t notice it and therefore can’t receive it.
There are always physical supportive things and non-physical supportive things that are being given by the Earth equally. Within this time in our society we are mostly aware of the physical ones, but there is now a growing awareness of the non-physical ones that are making a big difference for everyone tapping into them.
When we ground with an intentional practice we are regaining that connection with Earth while also tapping into that non-physical energy.
Ways To Ground Yourself
When we get negatively caught up in a situation, we get caught up in our head, and our emotions don’t feel very good. This is when we are ungrounded. To reground ourselves there can be many methods, some of which don’t specifically feel like we are connecting to the earth, like exercising or finding a hobby or a craft where you are physically using your hands to build something.
A few examples of the physical grounding methods that can still connect us to the Earth are eating healthy food, gardening and going for a walk through nature.
The non-physical grounding practices can also start with the simple act of walking or standing barefoot on the Earth’s grass, sand or mud. This specific grounding practice is called Earthing. Your skin absorbs what gets put on it, and so if you are directly standing on any of these areas you will absorb the nutrients and energy into your body.
Living in a time where we have lots of concrete and needing to wear shoes to protect our feet, we don’t connect to this natural source like we used to hundreds of years ago when we didn’t need these things.
There is also another form of grounding that is one of my personal favourites. If the weather and season is not conducive to walking barefoot outside, or you are stuck at work, or any situation where you can’t conveniently take off your shoes and go find some grass, there is a grounding meditation that can be done wherever you can sit and safely close your eyes.
Grounding Meditation:
Sit comfortably with your feet flat on the floor and close your eyes. Place your awareness at the bottoms of both your feet and the base of your spine. Visualise, sense or feel your roots (like roots of a tree) extending down from these areas down through all the floors of the building you are in, through all the layers of concrete, rock and soil of the earth. Root your roots into that deep, rich soil and intend that they are absorbing the nutrients and the healing, cleansing energy the Earth has, up your roots and into your body. Feel that energy cycle through your body, feeding your cells, systems and organs. See it spark a healing in any areas that you need and allow it to release any old stressful energies from your body, back down your roots and into the earth where it can be recycled. Allow this energy cycle to continue in your body for a few minutes. Feeling the healthy life energy of the Earth fill your body, while any energies relating to pain and uncomfortable emotions in your body release back down into the Earth.
Then when you feel complete with the practice, open your eyes and continue with your day. This meditation is great to do every single day either before bed or first thing when you wake up. Of course there is no limit to how often you can use it. Always use any sort of grounding method whenever you feel you need it.
Creating Stability In Your Life
Our lives can be filled with situations that feel like the ground has given away beneath us and we have a hard time handling whatever is in front of us. These are the most important times to find space to ground again. The physical ground beneath you is the Earth holding you up. She has the energy of a nurturer and a mother. Her energy is always there whenever you need it, especially when things get hard.
Using that grounding meditation gives you a visual representation of roots that keep you planted no matter what happens around you. It helps you gain that feeling of stability you are looking to have more of in your daily life, on top of its cleansing and healing support.
Grounding yourself regularly with multiple grounding methods is the best way to go, to feel connected, balanced and stable.
Conclusion
We are nature, just like any other animal or plant. We are re-connecting ourselves back to the Earth and to each other like we used to be, a millennia ago.
Regularly integrating grounding practices in your daily routine will help you clear energy stagnation in the body, feel more balanced in your head and help create a stability within your life when circumstances around you become challenging.
Grounding is a simple self-care method to help you reach your goals and be better equipped with all you have going on around you.
